  I'm a huge dork
I just finished reading all four Lord of the Rings books again. And I still loved them, and couldn't put them down. Oh, I should also mention that I've read them at least 5 times. I'm sure it's more. Anyway.
Erick laughs at me, but there are worse things I could be doing, right? I just can't help myself.
It's also interesting to compare them to the movies, now that I've seen the extended editions of all three of those. Let me say, Tolkein did a MUCH better job on the ending of Return of the King than Peter Jackson did. I'm sorry, but the ending of that movie just sucked. All those hobbits jumping on the bed, then those 3 or 4 false endings. No, just no.

Comments:
When I watched RotK in the theater, I remember chuckling to myself, "Hee hee, anyone here who hasn't read the books is being suckered into a fake ending." And then nothing happened. What a letdown.

I love those books too (and the kids are hooked on them too - Josh is re-reading them right now.)
The extended scenes in the last one contained some complete duds - the "we gotta wrap up the Saruman thing" scene just stunk! I would have rather had them forget about Saruman as they did in the theatrical release than that load of horse manure. And Aragorn chopping off the head of the Mouth of Sauron - since when is it a noble and kingly thing to assault someone coming out to parley?

I did like that they put in a couple scenes with Faramir that reduced my anger at what they did to him in movie two, LOL. And put some Faramir and Eowyn back in (I mean, we have here the one relationship that results in even a kiss in the entire book, and they reduce it to a two second scene at the end? Snort.)

Over all, give me the books any time...

LOL, Birgit, I LOVE the scene of Aragorn chopping off the mouth of Sauron's head! I know it wasn't kingly, but man, that guy was nasty.
But the whole scouring of the Shire thing was one of my favorite parts of the book, so I wish they could have fit that in somehow.

I am shocked, appalled, and dismayed. Yes, the thing was nasty (shudder), but Aragorn... he would have never... humph... LOL!!

I'm a bigger dork, or at least an older one ;). I have read them roughly once a year since I started back when I was 17 or 18. Movies like that make me think "yeah, that was good, but the book is waaaay better. I better go back and read it again." That is not a bad thing. I can't wait for The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe to come out this Christmas!!!

I don't see what's dorky about it in the least. No need to deprecate yourself. You're a cultured, well-read, or is that well-reread, person with good taste. :-)

Aw, thanks, Katherine! I guess I've come to think of it as dorky, since Erick laughs at me for re-re-re reading those books. But actually, I don't think being a dork is such a bad thing. :-)
